History

FLoRaSat was started by Juan Fraire at Inria Lyon, France. The simulator is built on top of FLoRa, a LoRa network simulator for OMNeT++. Over the years, many students have contributed to the project — none of them professional software developers, which is why the codebase carries the honest scars of academic research.

Each major version represents a significant architectural shift:

Version Focus
v1 Adapting FLoRa into FLoRaSat — work centered on the MAC layer
v2 Routing in satellite constellations (MAC layer removed)
v3 End-to-end connectivity (terminal → satellite → ground station) with PHY, MAC, and NET layer simulations
v4 Complete architectural redesign with modularity as the guiding principle — this version is built so the general architecture never needs to change again (hence the "Ultimate Edition" 🙂)
